Reality game shows nowadays focus on popularity and the conflicts created amongst participants which makes it exciting for a lot of viewers. But what if the challenge is more cerebral, requiring collaboration than competition?
In today’s podcast Episode 04: Ang Baybay ni Kuya, we find Zed working together with other contestants to overcome a math challenge. Interestingly, the key to this challenge also tells us a little something about our ancient languange and Filipino dynamics. But what could they be?
Let’s listen and find out!
Precalculus prepares learners for calculus, which challenges its learners to understand changes between values that are related by a function. This helps learners to anticipate or infer possible outcomes based on a few pieces of information. In fact, some prediction models on the spread of Covid-19 used calculus. But it’s not really everyday that we try to predict the spread of disease, so in simpler terms, we can very much apply this knowledge in our daily personal finances. And if you do want to specialize, precalculus skills are most helpful to learners who want to become programmers, game developers, data scientists and stock market analysts.
Even if a learner decides not to pursue calculus or other higher disciplines of math, precalculus and most math lessons hone our ability to organize and to think logically. These are perhaps important competencies that anyone will benefit from. If a learner routinely exercised these skills, this can help anybody live through a crisis, or fulfill a task in a game show without breaking a sweat, just like how Zed and her fellow contestants did in our episode today.
Interestingly, episode 4 also taught us 2 things: (1) Any shape (just like the titik “ba”) can be illustrated using mathematical equations and (2) bayanihan can be less improvised and more organized as demonstrated by Zed and her team.
Maybe, if our precalculus skills as a nation is honed, and if we partner this with our resiliency and malasakit sa kapwa, we can anticipate and overcome future calamities with better preparation all together.
