The Art of Self Care

Matiisin, masipag and matiyaga: these are valued traits a lot of Filipinos live by until now. And that is why when the movement towards self care started trending, a lot of Filipinos were encouraged to pamper themselves in order to compensate for the long arduous hours they dedicate for work. This year, despite the quarantine restrictions, there is no stopping Filipinos from treating each other or themselves during the holiday seasons. Since face-to-face pampering services are still currently off limits for most, we resort to the next best thing which is online shopping and gift giving.

Material self-care or shopping therapy can only go a long way. Instant gratification can be instantly forgotten as well. Self care can cost a lot less if routinely practiced. Whether you are a student busy with school work or an adult hustling all day, establishing a daily routine of self care can do any individual wonders.

In Episode 05: Ang Sining ng Baybayin, Zed delivers a podcast episode geared towards the understanding of the ancient writings of baybayin through meditation, art and movement practice. This integrative art form not only teaches us the ancient script, it also help us find our inner calm, affirms positive Filipino values and even helps us reconnect with nature. Are you curious to find out how ancient art forms can be practiced in contemporary times?

Let’s listen and find out!

Learning our ancient scripts allows us to reconnect with our past and also teaches us new ways of thinking, writing and expressing ourselves. Practicing any art form also affirms the uniqueness of our views, thoughts, feelings, experiences and the bodily sensations we restrain whenever we engage in the worldly routines that require us to conform to society standards and expectations. That is why dedicating a few minutes to just breathe or to let go of any expectations we set upon ourselves can release a lot of tension and offer us a lot of comfort afterwards.

Just like our routine of shopping therapy, you may want to consider meditation and art practice instead. It may not be instant, but it will cost you a lot less and surely offer you greater value in the long term.
